About Sketch4Home

Most home design advice is easier to understand as a quick drawing than as a page of rules.

Sketch4Home started with that simple idea. A plan view shows in one glance why a room feels wrong, and what a small change can fix. So instead of long articles and jargon, our guides show each common mistake beside its fix, sketched by hand, with the exact clearance, height or size to use.

What makes our guides different

  • One mistake per page. The mistake in red, the fix in green, and why it matters, in plain English.
  • Real numbers. Every guide gives clearances, heights and sizes in inches and millimetres, checked in 2026 against published guidance such as the International Residential Code (IRC), the National Electrical Code (NEC), the NKBA Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines, the UK Approved Documents and BS 7671, and the National Building Code of Canada.
  • Made for three countries. Written for homeowners in the USA, UK and Canada, with a word guide for terms that differ (worktop or countertop, hob or cooktop).
  • Built to be used. Each guide ends with a printable quick check to take to viewings, showrooms and site meetings.

Who it's for

Homeowners planning a renovation, people building new and reviewing a builder's plan, first-time buyers viewing homes, and anyone whose room "feels wrong" without knowing why.

A note on codes

Our guides give general design guidance. Building codes change and are adopted differently in each state, province and local authority, so always confirm requirements locally and use licensed professionals for regulated work.
