Too few lights on the tree

A box of 300 lights sounds like a lot. Spread over a 7.5 ft tree it leaves dark patches, and the ornaments disappear into the shadows.

Mistake 8

The wrong size tree for the room

Trees are measured without the stand or topper, and look smaller in the shop. At home, the topper bends against the ceiling or the tree blocks the walkway.

The fix: A tree 12 in (30 cm) shorter than the ceiling.

A wreath too small for the door

Wreaths look large up close in the shop. On a front door seen from the street, an 18 in (45 cm) wreath looks like a dinner plate.

The mistake: A small wreath, lost on the door.

The fix: A 24 in wreath on a 36 in door: about ⅔ of its width.
