Most home design mistakes are cheap to avoid
and expensive to fix.

A bed that faces the hallway. A dishwasher that can’t open past the drawers. A shower you can’t turn on without getting soaked. None of these cost extra to get right on paper, but once the walls, wires and pipes are in, every one costs real money to undo, or you live with it for years.

A peek inside

Every page: the mistake, the fix, the number.

Entry · Mistake 1

Front door opening straight onto the steps

With no landing outside, you step out of the door and straight down a stair while juggling keys, bags or a stroller.

US landing depth (IRC R311.3): at least 36" (915 mm), as wide as the door

The mistake: No landing: the first step starts right at the threshold. The fix: A 36"+ landing first, then even steps with a rail.

Stairs · Mistake 137

Stairs that are too steep

Steep stairs with tall risers and shallow treads save floor space, but they’re hard work to climb and frightening to come down, especially carrying a laundry basket or a child.

US (IRC) limits: riser ≤ 7¾" (196 mm), tread ≥ 10" (254 mm)

The mistake: Tall risers, shallow treads: a ladder-like stair. The fix: 7" risers and 11" treads: easy to climb.

Outdoor · Mistake 197

Garage too tight to open car doors

Many garages are built to the bare minimum. Today’s cars and SUVs are bigger, so you squeeze out through a half-open door, scrape the wall, and there’s no room for bikes, bins or a workbench.

One-car garage: 12′ × 20′ (3.7 × 6.1 m) tight · 14′ × 24′ (4.3 × 7.3 m) comfortable

The mistake: 20′ × 20′: doors can’t open, no storage. The fix: 24′ × 24′: doors open, room for a bench and bikes.

No. It’s a digital PDF. Read it on your phone, tablet or computer, or print it at home.

Can I print it?

Yes. It’s US Letter size. On A4 paper, choose “fit to page” when printing.

I live in the UK or Canada. Will it work for me?
