Mistake 3

Door swinging into the toilet or vanity

In small bathrooms the door often swings in and hits the toilet bowl or vanity before it’s fully open.

Bathroom door (common): 28–32" (710–815 mm) leaf

The mistake: The door hits the toilet halfway open.

The fix: A pocket door: no swing, full access.

Mistake 9

Shower controls under the shower head

When the valve is directly below the shower head, you have to reach through the spray to turn it on.

Control height (NKBA): 38–48" (965–1220 mm)

The mistake: Reach through cold spray to turn it on.

The fix: Controls by the entrance, away from the spray.

Mistake 15

Double sinks too close together

Two basins squeezed into a short vanity sound luxurious, but two people brushing their teeth end up bumping elbows, and the counter between the bowls is too narrow to put anything down.

Basin centers apart (US code min): 30" (760 mm)

The mistake: Two basins in 48": elbows collide, no counter.

The fix: 72" vanity with 36" between basins.
