Aisles too narrow for two cooks

A 36" aisle looks fine on paper, until the dishwasher door is down, the oven is open and someone needs to get to the fridge.

Work aisle, one cook (NKBA): 42" (1065 mm)

The mistake: 36" aisle with the dishwasher open: no way past.

The fix: 48" aisle: one cook loads, the other gets by.

Mistake 4

No landing space beside the cooktop

A cooktop jammed against a wall, a tall pantry or the end of a run gives you nowhere to set down a hot pan, rest a spoon or place ingredients.

Landing beside cooktop (NKBA): 12" (305 mm) one side, 15" (380 mm) other

The mistake: Range pushed against a tall cabinet: nowhere to set pans.

The fix: Landing space on both sides of the range.

Mistake 8

Dishwasher jammed into a corner

A dishwasher right next to an inside corner collides with the drawers or cabinet doors on the adjoining run.

Standing space beside dishwasher (NKBA): 21" (535 mm)

The mistake: Door down: the corner drawer is locked shut.

The fix: Dishwasher off the corner, beside the sink.
