Mistake 3

Squeezing the walkways around the bed

You need room on every side of the bed you actually use: to get in without climbing, to make the bed, and to walk past without bumping your shins.

Side of bed (minimum): 24" (610 mm)

The mistake: Wardrobe and dresser crowd the bed: a 14" sidestep and a cramped foot.

The fix: Same 10' room: clear sides and an easy walkway at the foot.

Mistake 2

Headboard under a window

Glass leaks cold air in winter and heat in summer, right next to your head.

Gap between headboard and window: 4–6" (100–150 mm)

The mistake: Drafts, glare and a blocked escape route, right at your pillow.

The fix: Solid wall behind the bed; the window gets a reading nook.

Mistake 17

Furniture blocking the escape window

In a fire, the bedroom window may be your way out and the firefighters’ way in.

US (IRC R310): opening ≥ 5.7 sq ft (0.53 m²), min 24" (610 mm) high × 20" (510 mm) wide, sill ≤ 44" (1118 mm)

The mistake: A tall dresser in front of the only escape window.

The fix: Clear, low and easy to open, sized to your local code.
