TV mounted too high above the fireplace

Above the mantel looks tidy on a floor plan, but it puts the screen far above your eye line when you’re sitting down.

Seated eye level (typical sofa): 38–42" (965–1065 mm) above floor

The mistake: Screen center at 72": head tilted back all evening.

The fix: TV beside the fireplace at seated eye level.

Mistake 7

Rug too small for the seating group

A small rug floating in the middle of the furniture, with no legs on it, looks like an island and visually shrinks the room.

Typical living room rug: 8′ × 10′ (2.4 × 3.0 m) or 9′ × 12′ (2.7 × 3.7 m)

The mistake: A small rug floating in the middle: nothing ties together.

The fix: Front legs on a large rug: one connected seating group.

Mistake 1

Sofa blocking the way into the room

When the back of the sofa faces the doorway, the first thing you meet when you walk in is a wall of upholstery.

Main walkway: 36" (915 mm) or more

The mistake: Sofa back to the door: everyone detours around it.

The fix: Group opens toward the door; the path runs along the edge.
