Recessed lights laid out in a rigid grid

A neat grid of downlights looks tidy on a ceiling plan, but it ignores where the furniture, art and counters are.

Wall-wash lights from the wall: about 18–24" (455–610 mm)

The mistake: Grid of 12 downlights, ignoring the furniture.

The fix: Fewer lights, placed for walls, art and seating.

Mistake 5

Light switch behind the door

If the door swings open over the light switch, you have to walk into the dark room, close the door or reach around it to find the switch.

Switch from door frame: within about 6" (150 mm), latch side

The mistake: Switch hidden behind the open door.

The fix: Switch on the latch side, where your hand goes.

Mistake 11

Pendants hung too low or too high

Pendants over an island hung too low block the view across the kitchen and get bumped by heads; too high and they glare in your eyes and stop lighting the counter.

Above island or counter: 30–36" (760–915 mm) to fixture bottom

The mistake: Pendants at eye level block the view across the island.

The fix: 32" above the counter: lit work surface, clear view.
