Tall furniture not anchored to the wall

Children climb dressers like ladders and pull open several drawers at once.

Anti-tip strap: fixed into a stud or a rated wall anchor

The mistake: An unanchored dresser tips as a child climbs.

The fix: Dresser strapped to the wall, heavy things low.

Mistake 5

Top bunk too close to the ceiling or fan

Kids sit up, kneel and bounce on the top bunk. With little headroom they hit their heads on the ceiling, and a ceiling fan or light fixture overhead is a real injury risk.

Headroom above top mattress (comfortable): about 30–36" (760–915 mm)

The mistake: Top bunk right under a ceiling fan.

The fix: Bunks away from the fan, headroom to sit up.

Mistake 6

Storage too high for little hands

If toys, clothes and books live on high shelves and in a tall wardrobe, children can’t get anything out, or put it back, without an adult.

Easy reach for preschoolers: up to about 36" (915 mm)

The mistake: Toys and clothes up high: kids climb or give up.

The fix: Low cubbies and a lowered rod: everything in reach.
